Jason Tassie, Founder, Know Your Business

Today we're meeting Jason, Founder at Know Your Business.

Jason's company specialises in business banking and business finance comparison for UK small businesses, start-ups, and entrepreneurs.

Over to you Jason - my questions are in bold:

Who are you and what's your background?

I am a serial entrepreneur with over a decade of experience in the digital finance comparison space. My background is rooted in building transparent, technology-driven tools that empower users to make informed financial decisions. I was the Co-founder of knowyourmoney.co.uk, a consumer finance comparison platform that grew into a significant resource in the UK market. This experience provided invaluable insight into the mechanics of financial lead generation, customer acquisition, and regulatory compliance.

I've taken that foundation and shifted focus to the business sector. I am currently the Founder of Engage Media, where I lead the strategic vision for our B2B comparison platform, knowyourbusiness.co.uk. My goal is to apply the same principles of transparency and efficiency from the B2C world to the often-complex procurement of business services and finance.

What is your job title and what are your general responsibilities?

I am the Founder of Engage Media and Head of Product and Strategy for our primary platform, knowyourbusiness.co.uk.

My responsibilities are centred on setting the strategic direction for the company's growth, which involves identifying key gaps in the B2B service market that we can simplify through comparison. I oversee business development, forging relationships with key financial and service providers, and defining our product roadmap to ensure we deliver the clearest, most valuable comparison experience for SMEs.

Can you give us an overview of your business?

knowyourbusiness.co.uk is a UK-based comparison website owned by Engage Media Ltd that specialises in business banking and business finance products.

We're your go-to source for small businesses, start-ups, and entrepreneurs who want straight-talking, practical advice on building, running, and growing a company. Starting out can feel overwhelming. Sorting your finances, understanding tax rules, picking the right financial products… it's a lot. That's exactly why we're here.

We bring you easy-to-follow guides, hands-on insights, and expert tips for every step of your journey, from setting up your first company to tackling tougher topics like business loans, bookkeeping, and self-employment taxes. We want to give business owners the knowledge they need to make smart, confident choices.

If you need useful insights to help you get your idea off the ground, scaling up fast, or finding better ways to handle your money, knowyourbusiness.co.uk is right here with you. We believe that with the right support, every entrepreneur, no matter where they're starting from, has the power to build something brilliant.

Tell us how you are funded?

Engage Media is currently self-funded/bootstrapped. We are focused on organic growth, building on the successful, capital-efficient model I developed during my time at knowyourmoney.co.uk. This approach allows us to maintain full control over our product vision and focus exclusively on delivering value to our users.

What's the origin story? Why did you start the company?

The origin of Engage Media and knowyourbusiness.co.uk stems directly from the success and limitations I experienced in the B2C sector. At knowyourmoney.co.uk, we proved that digital comparison creates immense value and trust. However, I noticed a significant imbalance: businesses, particularly SMEs, still spend countless hours navigating complex, high-value financial decisions without the benefit of a centralised, trustworthy comparison tool.

The B2B procurement process is often slow, requires multiple human touchpoints, and lacks price transparency. I started this company to solve that problem—to reduce the friction in B2B decision-making. We aim to give business owners back their most valuable asset, time, by automating the comparison process for their essential services, ensuring they get the best deal with minimal effort.

Who are your target customers? What's your revenue model?

Our primary target customers are UK Small to Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), particularly those who are highly engaged in digital services and are moving beyond sole proprietorship into growth stages.

Our revenue model is based on Performance-Based Lead Generation (CPA/CPL/CPC) and, increasingly, Commercial Partnerships that realise the long term value of the customer through life time revenue share models.

If you had a magic wand, what one thing would you change in the banking and/or FinTech sector?

Speeding up the compliance sign off process as it significantly reduces that level to which we can test and learn new comparison formats and what works best for our users. Hopefully the emergence of RegTech will help some of the larger bank come through this challenge.

Can you list 3 people you rate from the FinTech and/or Financial Services sector that we should be following on LinkedIn, and why?

  • Simon Taylor (Tempo, FinTech Brainfood, formerly Head of Ventures at 11:FS): A leading voice, particularly in embedded finance and open data. His commentary is sharp, practical, and highly relevant to the future of B2B services and how finance integrates into non-financial platforms.
  • Mike Jones – (Head of Growth Tide Bank) Quite simply he knows everyone, if you need a contact – speak to Mike.

What FinTech services (and/or apps) do you personally use?

  • Tide – Amazed at their full service offering for businesses, from accounting and finance to payment terminals and payroll. All within one app.
  • Monzo – has been great for managing the kids finances. Makes pocket money and getting my money back that they owe me much easier.

What's the best new FinTech product or service you've seen recently?

Adclear.ai – we are currently trialling Adclear which is an AI compliance platform, have been very impressed so far at how quickly it can sign of financial promotions with a high level of accuracy.

What is your message for the larger players in the Financial Services marketplace?

Trying to build every acquisition channel in-house is costly and slow. Large players need to recognise platforms like ours are not just competitors for the user's click; we are highly efficient customer segmentation and trust-building engines. By collaborating fully with comparison sites, you gain access to pre-qualified, informed customers at a lower, predictable CPA, allowing you to focus your internal resources on product innovation and core service delivery.

Where do you get your Financial Services/FinTech industry news from?

Finextra and FinTech Futures for in-depth coverage of banking tech, regulation (RegTech), and core financial transformation news.

Finally, let's talk predictions. What trends do you think are going to define the next few years in the FinTech sector?

The Rise of Embedded B2B Finance: Finance will disappear into non-financial software. Instead of a business going to a bank for a loan, the loan will be offered automatically within their accounting software, ERP system, or marketplace platform (B2B Buy Now Pay Later, embedded working capital). The FinTech success stories of the future will be the infrastructure layers powering this invisible integration.
