Burbank's Justin Pike predicts card present over internet experiences will become standard in eCommerce by end of 2026, as trust becomes a hard commercial metric.

2026 FinTech Predictions: Insights from Justin Pike of Burbank

We spoke with Justin, Founder and CEO of Burbank, a company whose technology enables consumer authentication anywhere, anytime using the globally familiar and trusted tap and PIN process.

Over to you Justin - my questions are in bold:

What's the biggest shift you expect across financial services in 2026?

By the end of 2026, card present over internet experiences will be standard in the parts of eCommerce where trust matters most. Our research with YouGov shows that 56 per cent of consumers would feel more comfortable completing online purchases in a payment process that mirrors tap and PIN at a physical terminal - something familiar, visible, and within their control.

Which emerging technology will have the most practical impact on banks and the FinTechs that support them?

In the next 12 months, we'll see merchants beginning to respond. More high-value, cross-border and new-to-brand transactions are likely to be routed through experiences that offer visible reassurance, such as CPoI®. When customers can follow a payment process they already trust, confidence rises, and so does completion.

What risks or blind spots do you think the industry is underestimating as we move into 2026?

In 2026, trust stops being a soft concept and becomes a hard metric. Burbank's recent consumer research shows that 50% of shoppers have abandoned an online purchase due to security fears, even when they wanted the product. This is not a UX issue, it's a commercial one.

I expect we will see merchants start responding to "trust-led abandonment" alongside conversion, and redesign journeys to reduce fear, confusion and perceived risk. The brands that build trust signals into every optimisation cycle will see the biggest lift in completed baskets, especially for first-time customers and high-value transactions.
